A trivial take on generative design in architecture and urban planning might focus on futuristic-looking buildings and plazas with complex shapes. However, to truly understand its impact, it's helpful to step back and consider an analogous revolution in a different field.

In the 1980s, Microsoft Excel revolutionized financial modeling. This transformation wasn't about sheer computational power; after all, people with just paper and pen could perform remarkable calculations. The revolution lay in how we did the math. Excel enabled users to change one variable and instantly see the results. This immediate feedback loop allowed for the exploration of all sorts of new financial models that were previously unimaginable due to the cumbersome manual processes.

Generative design offers a similar breakthrough. By using algorithms, we can tweak specific parameters and instantly generate new design options. The true value here isn't about the superiority of algorithm-based design but rather the ability to quickly test and iterate ideas. This capability has profound implications for both designers and clients. Architects can explore a vast array of concepts during the conceptual design phase before committing to detailed drawings. Simultaneously, clients can actively participate in the design process from the very beginning, influencing directions of the project.
